India’s 5G Revolution: A Telecom game changer, BSNL is going to upgrade 92,500 Towers to 5G in a few months
BSNL, a short form of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, is in the news once again. Now, it is going to make a major jump from 4G networks to 5G within just 6 to 8 months. According to “Business Standard”, the bold promise is made at the Kautilya Economic Conclave by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
According to “Business Standard”, more than 92500 4G towers all over India are ready for full 5G transformation. These towers already match the software-hardware criteria, and those are 5G-upgradable by design. It is expected that the switch can be done in a cost-efficient budget, and the switch will be completed faster than usual.
After some years, BSNL is now in profit again. It is showing a good profit margin with over ₹5,000 crore. With ultra-high-speed Internet, more use cases of smart city, immersive IoT, EdTech, Industry 4.0 and telemedicine, BSNL is showing a growth in subscribers. People started gaining trust in the connectivity as the network expanded.

To make BSNL totally 5G ready is not as smooth as it looks. It still has some issues and challenges with backhaul infrastructure, expenditure of initial capital, and allocation of Spectrum. But the one relief point is that the towers are already 5G-ready by design in many places, so BSNL can save some money by avoiding the replacement of full hardware. Some of the towers are already live now. BSNL is also going to face some more important hurdles to roll out new 5G plans, Voice over 5G support systems and ensure compatibility of 5G handsets.
With the 5G boom, BSNL is now in the initial stage of launching its ultra-speed network in India soon. India is going to design its new network era with some homegrown technology to support 5G rollout on a mass scale now.
